The PHILSSA-DFID GTF Project Launch
Building, Strengthening, Institutionalizing Effective Partnerships. This theme was echoed throughout the launch of the project Institutionalising Local and National Partnerships to Address Urban Poverty and Homelessness in the Philippines (PHILSSA-DFID GTF Project) last 21 April 2009, at the Ruby Ballroom of the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila. Attended by over a hundred individuals, the event gathered together PHILSSA's board of trustees and member-NGOs throughout the country and their partners from the local and national government units, people's organizations and federations, and other nongovernment institutions.
Special Course in Urban and Regional Planning
In line with the DFID project Institutionalising Local and National Partnerships to Address Urban Poverty and Homelessness in the Philippines, PHILSSA through ALTERPLAN organized a training entitled Special Course in Urban and Regional Planning: Rationalizing the Local Planning System-Focus on CSO Participation last April 1-3, 2009 at UP Diliman.
The PHILSSA-DFID GTF Project Orientation
The orientation for the NGO partners of the project Institutionalising Local and National Partnerships to Address Urban Poverty and Homelessness in the Philippines (PHILSSA-DFID GTF Project) was held last 30-31 March 2009 at the Institute of Social Order. The meeting had been a venue for a more detailed discussion of the project and for a deeper appreciation of the Governance and Transparency Fund (GTF) and the network's responsibilities and possible contribution as one of its grant holders.
Microfinance and Poverty Reduction
Poverty is a reality that cuts across class and gender and race, and we must be ready to stand up and face that reality. In the Philippines, 2.2 million are unemployed while 6.1 million are underemployed, according to the latest survey. Two out of ten Filipinos suffer from hunger, and some say that three out of ten children suffer from malnutrition. It seems that it would take a massive restructuring of government programs and policies to arrest said conditions. And perhaps, one of the solutions to that massive poverty is to look into income generating project that offers microfinance setup geared toward the masses.
PHILSSA Holds Its 19th General Assembly
Last 22-23 April 2009, PHILSSA held its 19th general assembly at the Institute of Social Order. This was attended by the network's 43 member-organizations from all over the country.
